dernier roi de Jérusalem, Guy, seigneur de Chypre, fit venir de son ancien royaume de Jérusalem des Francs et des Syriens chrétiens pour assurer la présence latine dans une île dont la plupart des habitants étaient grecs, à l’exception des quelques marchands des comptoirs italiens. Ils furent rejoints par des chevaliers venus d’Occident avec la croisade Les chevaliers reçurent des fiefs pris sur les terres de l’ancien despote, de l’aristocratie et de l’Eglise grecques. Un régime féodal latin fut ainsi établi.

frère de Guy, Amaury II, ancien connétable du royaume de Jérusalem, lui succède en 1194. En 1195, il fit de Chypre un royaume, obtenant la couronne royale de l’empereur germanique alors que Richard, emprisonné à son retour de croisade, avait dû renoncer à sa suzeraineté. Le monarque mit progressivement en place des institutions inspirées à la fois de celles du royaume de Jérusalem et de l’ancienne administration byzantine.

A le chute finale d'Acre, de nombreux réfugiés s’établirent à Chypre et le commerce se replia sur l’île, assurant la fortune de la ville de Famagouste, considérée alors comme la nouvelle Acre.

Après une régence de deux ans durant la minorité du roi, Pierre II fut couronné roi de Chypre à Nicosie en 1371 et roi de Jérusalem à Famagouste en 1372. Lors de cette dernière cérémonie, un conflit de préséance opposa Génois et Vénitiens et dégénéra en rixe sanglante. S’estimant lésés, les Génois ravagèrent l’île et s’emparèrent pendant près d’un siècle de la ville de Famagouste. Des membres de la famille royale furent amenés à Gênes comme otages. A la mort de Pierre II, un frère de Pierre Ier, Jacques Ier (r. 1382-1398) revint de Gênes pour ceindre la couronne d’un royaume ruiné.
